Thursday marks key deadline to enroll in government health care

SAN ANTONIO – Thursday marks the second Open Enrollment deadline for the 2015 Health Insurance Marketplace. 

For coverage starting on Feb. 1, it is important for people to sign-up now.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services officials said in a statement Wednesday that 859,377 Texans had enrolled for coverage as of Jan. 9.

Open enrollment began Nov. 15 and ends on Feb. 15. HHS Secretary Sylvia Burwell said those who don't enroll by then may have to wait until next year to select a plan. 

The deadline is Thursday for consumers looking for coverage to begin on Feb. 1.

Health and Human Services officials say nearly 6.8 million people had selected a plan or were automatically re-enrolled since open enrollment began.

Consumers should visit HealthCare.gov to review and compare health plan options and find out if they are eligible for financial assistance, which can help pay monthly premiums and reduce out-of-pocket costs when receiving services.
