SE Side residents concerned by recent violence streak

2 men fatally shot Saturday in parking lot of sports bar

SAN ANTONIO – There is a growing concern from residents on the Southeast Side that violence may be on the rise in the Brooks City Base area.

The concern is centered around the 2600 block of Southeast Military Drive where a surge of revitalization and growth is underway.

Some longtime residents fear what the future holds for the area following a double murder Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Flying Tiger Sports Bar.

Resident Edward Alexander thinks more police presence would help curb the violence.

"Patrolling, yeah, that would be helpful, because I don't really see them patrolling too much around this area," said Alexander.

In 2014, there were 15 assaults/fights, two threats, three disturbances with a gun/knife, two shootings and one cutting in the 2600 block of SE Military Drive.

Fernando Lopez said he may be forced to carry his own weapon.

"Yeah it does raise concerns, as a matter a fact, where you get to a point where you have to get your own concealed weapon or something of that nature in order to protect yourself. I have a family and I have kids," said Lopez.

San Antonio police have identified the alleged shooter in Saturday's double murder case as 44-year-old Santiago Hernandez. He's in custody and has been charged with capital murder.

Officers also arrested 23-year-old Dillion Soto. He faces charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and evading arrest.
