Lent begins with Ash Wednesday services at San Fernando Cathedral

SAN ANTONIO – Dozens attended mass early Wednesday morning to take part in Ash Wednesday services at San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio.

The first service of the day began just after 6 a.m. at the historic church located on Main Plaza.

Ash Wednesday marks the start of the holy season of Lent for Christians around the world.

It is a traditionally a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the Easter celebration.

For centuries, Christians have received a cross of ashes on Ash Wednesday as a reminder of mortal failings and an invitation to receive God's forgiveness.
