When is it legal to cross the street?

You may have heard that pedestrians have the right of way. That's not always true.

Officer Marcus Trujillo with the San Antonio Police Department explains when you can legally cross.

"Pedestrians should be either in a crosswalk or at the corners – street corners or intersections when they cross. Crossing in the middle of the block is not a good idea. It's not authorized unless there's an actual crosswalk in the middle of the block as we have in some areas in the downtown vicinity.

If there's a traffic control device, then the pedestrian has to also adhere to the rules of the traffic control device, whether that traffic control device says it's okay to walk or that they have to until traffic stops so they can proceed."
