SAN ANTONIO – Hundreds of drivers pack Highway 151 near Loop 1604 every day.

"You're bumper to bumper, stop and go," said driver Claudia Wood.

Traffic has always been an issue and TxDOT is hoping to change that with a new project.

"The big thing is going to be southbound 1604 on westbound 151," said TxDOT spokesman Josh Donat. "We are going to have a direct connector that moves from 1604 to 151 to help folks get through that area."

Donat says the area is growing and improvement needs to be made to keep up with the city's high traffic demand.

"We have another project that will start later this year to continue the expressway on 1604 from Wiseman down to Potranco," Donat said. "We are really hitting this area pretty hard because we know that it's growing."

Drivers are ready, not just for the work to start, but also for it to be completed.

"To be honest, I think it will make traffic a lot smoother," said driver Josh Martinez. "If you notice over there it takes a while for the lights and all that stuff, so I believe it will make it faster and I think it will make the area look nicer as well."

Construction is set to last about 18 to 20 months.

TxDOT says it will try to avoid traffic nightmares during the week and do most of the work overnight.
