2 immigrants hidden inside speaker box rescued

CBP officials: Pair was sweaty, 1 person complained of dizziness

SARITA, Texas – Two people were rescued by U.S. Border Patrol agents after being found in the trunk of a car at the Sarita Border Patrol Checkpoint, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials said.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, when agents from the Kingsville Station encountered a woman, who border patrol officials said is a U.S. citizen, who was driving a white sedan in the primary inspection lane.

After a service K-9 alert, the sedan was referred to a secondary inspection, where agents found two immigrants hiding inside of a speaker box in the trunk of the sedan, CBP officials said.

The pair were sweaty and one complained of dizziness from being inside the speaker box, authorities said.

While inside the confined space, the pair would not have been able to get out by themselves in case of an emergency due to the trunk being locked. Border patrol officials said both rescued individuals were offered medical attention, but declined.

The pair will be processed for removal, CBP officials said.
