Northwest Vista students host House Dist. 124 candidate debate
SAN ANTONIO – The special election for Texas House District 124 is just around the corner and as the race heats up, some local students from Northwest Vista College are asking the candidates about the issues.
All four candidates -- Nathan Alonzo, Delicia Herrera, Ina Minjarez and David Rosa -- touched on issues from education to veterans' health care on Wednesday.
"I believe as a veteran of the Air Force Academy, people have the right to (carry guns)," said Rosa. "I don't particularly use guns. If you see them, it's an individual issue."
"Education, transportation, congestion, workforce development -- those are the top-tier issues," said Herrera.
"The legislature feels that we need an additional $5 billion every year because the population is growing, so I think we need to look at other means to fund transportation," said Minjarez.
"We have to take care of those who have protected us, veterans who are coming back," said Alonzo. "We need to make sure that they get the medical health care that they were promised."
The Northwest Vista College Project Democratic Student Organization and the Alamo Colleges Democracy Commitment sponsored Wednesday's forum.
"I thought it was actually kind of interesting, seeing personalities and opinions coming out of each of the representatives," said Katelyn Veverka, a student at the forum. "Even though some answers were almost the same."
Early voting for the special election wraps up on Friday and election day is scheduled for Tuesday.
