Big Give organizers hoping for big donations

April 10 deadline for organizations wishing to participate

SAN ANTONIO – It's a 24-hour day of giving that starts at the stroke of midnight and ends with millions of dollars in possible donations.

The Big Give SA, which will be held May 5,  is entering its second year with loftier goals after last year's unexpected success.

The goal last year was to reach $1 million in donations -- a goal reached by 2:30 p.m.

The final tally: $2,095,606.50, including prize money and outside nonprofit matches given offline.

Organizers this year are hoping to surpass that mark.

"We're not even done yet" said John Burnam, Big Give SA coordinating consultant. "We're still out negotiating, still talking, still trying to go out and find opportunities. Our goal now is $3 million."

Every donation will be tracked live and in real-time on a leader board, which will be displayed at thebiggivesa.org.

Prize money will be given out every hour to those with the most donors.

Those with the largest number of donors at the end of the 24-hour period will receive even bigger prizes.

The minimum donation is $10.

Across the city, there are dozens of events being held by more than 700 organizations participating in The Big Give SA and KSAT will have live reports from several locations throughout the day.

How does a charity participate?

Any 501(c)(3) organization in Atacosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, or Wilson  county is welcome to participate in The Big Give S.A. Nonprofit registration closes April 10, 2015. There is no fee to participate. An eligible organization will have one profile on The Big Give S.A. site. While the organizational description can include all of the agency's programs and services, donors cannot designate or restrict their donations to a particular program. Each participating nonprofit is eligible for matching funds and prize incentives. If you missed the chance to sign up this year, please mark your calendars for 2016!
