SAN ANTONIO – Ina Minjarez, a former Bexar County prosecutor and Delicia Herrera a former San Antonio City Council member, respectively, will head to a run-off over the Texas House of Representatives seat for District 124.
They were vying for the seat of Jose Menendez, who left office in February to become a Texas senator.
Minjarez won a total of 828 votes, resulting in 42.22% of votes and Herrera won 555 votes resulting 28.30% of the total.
The run-off is the latest in a parade of special elections to replace lawmakers who won different elected posts or left the Legislature after November's election.
That's when every major statewide office in Texas got a new occupant, though all remained Republican-controlled.
Menendez created the final vacancy by beating fellow San Antonio Democratic Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer to succeed state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte.
Van de Putte, also a Democrat, left the Senate to run for San Antonio mayor.
