ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas – A Pearsall Police Department officer who died Sunday afternoon in a traffic accident in Atascosa County has been identified.
Officer Mike Villarreal was transporting a juvenile to the Juvenile Detention Facility in Jourdandton when his Pearsall police unit collided with another vehicle.
The Atascosa County sheriff said the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. five miles west of Jourdanton on Highway 97.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is still investigating the crash, but said Villarreal's vehicle collided head-on with a Ford F-350 pickup.
"We don't know if speed was a factor at this time but as you see the officers behind me, as soon as they conclude their investigation, hopefully they'll be able to give us more details about what actually happened," Texas State Trooper Cpl. Deon Cockrell said.
Villarreal died at the scene. The driver of the pickup and the juvenile being transported were unconscious when paramedics arrived and taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital in San Antonio.
DPS said Sunday the investigation into the crash is still in its early stages.
