Fire destroys NW Side home

Woman's home of 32 years on Waverly Avenue burns

SAN ANTONIO – Flames broke out at a home just north of Culebra Road on the city's Northwest Side Monday morning.

The woman who lives there said she was inside the house in the 2600 block of Waverly Avenue taking a nap when she said one of her cats began scratching on her door around 9:30 a.m.

She said she thought it was a burglar and when she got up to check it out, she realized her house was on fire.

She said she'd been living in the home for 32 years and all of her belongings were destroyed.

"The whole house is pretty much totaled," said San Antonio Fire Battalion Chief Keith Crusius.

Firefighters said the fire started in the kitchen, probably by something cooking on the stove.

They said it took them longer to fight the flames because there was so much stuff inside the home.

The woman was not hurt but it was not clear whether all of her cats made it out.
