Woman shot in chest during attempted robbery

SAPD: Suspect, victim knew each other

SAN ANTONIO – A woman was shot in the chest late Tuesday night during an apparent robbery attempt at an apartment complex on the city's North Side.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. at the Arriba En Blanco Apartments in the 5200 block of Blanco Road.

Rosalinda Pratt, an apartment resident, was concerned to hear about a shooting just a few doors away from her sister's apartment.

"Now I'm afraid because we sleep right by the windows," she said.

Although residents were worried, police said the shooting didn't appear to be random.

"The suspect was invited into the location, which shows us the suspect and the victim, they all knew each other in this case," said Officer Douglas Greene, a San Antonio Police Department spokesman.

Police believe that the gunman might have been trying to rob the apartment.

They said the woman who was shot was visiting and was likely not the intended target.

"The suspect entered the location, he confronted the male, he displayed a handgun," Greene said. "

At that time, the suspect and the male got into a physical altercation. In the process of doing that, the handgun went off and struck the victim in the upper body."

Friends took the woman to a nearby Valero store, where she was taken by ambulance to University Hospital. She was listed in stable condition.

Police continue to search for the gunman.

"At this point we do have a few leads, no arrests at this time but we're hopeful that we will make an arrest soon in this case based on the evidence that we've gathered so far," Greene said.

The gunman will likely be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Greene said.
