Police arrest suspected child molester

Hugo Hernandez-Escobar accused of sexually assaulting girl, 8

SAN ANTONIO – A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the sexual assault of an 8-year-old girl.

San Antonio police said they caught Hugo Hernandez-Escobar just as he was making plans to leave town.

Hernandez-Escobar originally is from Guatemala, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Police said they also heard that he was planning to travel to New York.

The affidavit stated that the girl reluctantly spoke out earlier this month, only telling her mother what happened after she caught the girl crying while talking to her friends.

The girl later told police that Hernandez-Escobar began having sex with her when she was 6 years old, stopped for a while when she wasn't around him regularly, but then resumed recently.

The affidavit stated that she said the suspect first approached her when she was 6, asking her if she knew what sex was. The girl said the suspect then made her watch while he had sex with a woman, the affidavit said.

Soon after that, she said Hernandez-Escobar began sexually assaulting her and threatening to hit her with a belt if she told anyone, the affidavit stated.

After learning what happened, the girl's mother confronted Hernandez-Escobar, who denied doing anything wrong, the affidavit stated.

He was booked into the Bexar County Jail on Wednesday.
