Fill the Boot Campaign begins this week

SAFD will be accepting donations at 21 intersections

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio firefighters are gearing up for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Fill the Boot Campaign.

A ceremony was held Tuesday for the official kickoff. Firefighters will be accepting donations at 21 intersections on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This will be the 61st year they take to the streets to raise money for MDA.

At the ceremony, a fire lieutenant recalled a summer when he volunteered at an MDA summer camp, one of the activities made possible by the donations.

"To witness the smile on a child's face as they were assisted into the swimming pool or to hear their laughter as they experience the zip line ride, which temporarily freed them from their wheelchair, truly touched my heart and it compelled me to work harder," said Lt. Dean A. Solis with the San Antonio Fire Department. "To give these young people a chance to liberate themselves from the struggles they face on a daily basis and simply be kids."

In 2014, San Antonio firefighters raised more than $240,000 for MDA.
