Motorcyclist killed in chain-reaction crash on I-35

SAPD: Fatal crash occurred after suspected DWI driver crashed into retaining wall, blocked exit

SAN ANTONIO – A motorcyclist died Thursday night in an accident on the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 on the Northeast Side.

San Antonio police said the driver of a pickup truck struck a retaining wall as he attempted to exit the interstate onto Weidner Road just before 10 p.m.

The truck stopped at the exit ramp and a red car attempting to take the same exit came to a stop as well because the driver could not get around the accident, police said.

A motorcyclist then rear-ended the red car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the driver of the pickup attempted to flee the scene without his front tire, but only managed to travel about two blocks from the fatal crash.

A witness told SAPD officials the driver of pickup truck threw a beer can out of the truck.

The driver of the pickup truck was arrested on suspicion of DWI and unlawfully carrying a hand gun.

SAPD officials said he was not expected to face charges related to the fatal crash.

The motorcyclist has not been identified.
