Mayoral candidates debate on KTSA radio

Van de Putte, Taylor vie for mayoral nomination

SAN ANTONIO – Tuesday the two candidates seeking the mayoral candidacy took part in a debate hosted by KTSA radio.

Former State Senator Leticia Van de Putte applauded Mayor Ivy Taylor's push to lower the property tax rate in the wake of rising property appraisals by saying it's something the city should have done a long time ago.

"That's the only way we're going to get a handle on it," said Van de Putte. "The strong leadership of the county has done this more than three times. The city hasn't done a thing except brag about keeping your property taxes low when in fact, the values go up."

"It will ultimately end up having an impact on the economy, on the people's abilities to feel secure and stay in their homes," said Taylor. "I met with the chief appraiser to try and have a better understanding about the direction they are going."

Election Day is June 13. Early voting in the runoff election for mayor begins Monday.
