Man who shot deputy in 2001 arrested again

Michael Benitez, 35, booked on federal drug, weapons charges

SAN ANTONIO – A man who was convicted in 2002 of shooting a deputy in 2001 during the execution of a search warrant is behind bars again.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, during the execution of a search warrant Wednesday the BCSO Narcotics Unit found more than a pound of methamphetamine and cocaine in the bedroom of a home in the 2400 block of Texas Avenue that was being occupied by Michael Benitez, 35.

Officials said they also found a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun.

Benitez, who served 12 years of a 29-year sentence for aggravated assault on a public servant, was released from prison in December 2014.

Benitez is being booked into a detention center on federal drug and weapons charges.
