CBP officers find 16 packages hidden within vehicle

LAREDO, Texas – Officers seized about $1 million worth of suspected heroin and cocaine this past weekend at the Laredo Port of Entry, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection says.

The seizure happened Sunday at Gateway to the Americas Bridge when officers referred a 2008 Dodge Avenger driven by a 55-year-old man from Aguascalientes, Mexico, for a secondary examination, CBP officials said.

During the examination, officers found 16 packages hidden within the car. Authorities said officers initially found eight packages that contained about 32½ pounds of suspected cocaine, with a street value of around $250,000.

Officers searched further and found another eight packages that contained about 33½ pounds of heroin, with an estimated street value of $762,000, according to CBP officials.

Officers seized the narcotics and car. CBP officials said the driver was arrested and turned over to special agents with Homeland Security Investigations for further investigating.
