Police say drunk driver to blame in double fatal crash

Driver slammed into rear of car stopped at a red light

SAN ANTONIO – Two people are dead and another two are in the hospital after the car they were in was hit by a drunk driver. The crash happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday on the access road of Southwest Loop 410, off Highway 151.

Family members of one of the victims said the three men and one woman who were in the car worked at Cheddars. The victims were on their way home from work when they were hit.

San Antonio Police Department spokesman Doug Greene said the Mitsubishi Galant they were in was stopped at a traffic light on the southbound side of the Loop 410 access road when the car was struck by a Chevrolet Captiva.

Police said the driver of the Captiva, Sylvia Herrera, 26, was traveling at a high rate of speed when she slammed into the Mitsubishi.

Police said the impact was so great that both back-seat passengers, Nicholas Ramirez, 22, and Lauren Molina, 21, were killed. Both were wearing their seat belts.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and his front-seat passenger were both seriously injured and transported to the hospital.

Herrera was also injured.

"The driver of the vehicle (Herrera) that struck the vehicle that was stopped showed signs of intoxication but also had some minor injuries," said Greene. "The officers had to transport her to University Hospital to get treated."

Pending the investigation, Herrera faces two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault.
