Girl, 12, leaving school summer camp hit by truck

Victim critically injured in accident near Tejeda Middle School

SAN ANTONIO – A 12-year-old girl was critically injured when she was hit by a pickup truck Monday on the city's North Side.

The girl, who had left Tejeda Middle School where she was attending summer camp, was airlifted to University Hospital.

San Antonio Fire Department spokesman Christian Bove said the student was using a crosswalk at the intersection of Evans Road and Rio Grande Court around noon when a sport utility vehicle stopped for the girl. The driver of the pickup passed the SUV and then tried to avoid the victim but couldn't.

The girl was apparently wearing headphones and looking at her cellphone and didn't hear the traffic or warnings, Bove said.

The driver of the pickup isn't expected to be charged, Bove said.

"At this point, it looks like an unfortunate, tragic accident," Bove said

The victim was scheduled to enter the eighth grade in August.
