State leaders request removal of tolls from 281 expansion

Texas Sen. Campbell, Rep. Larson address letter to county commissioner, Alamo Area MPO

SAN ANTONIO – Texas Sen. Donna Campbell, R-Dist. 25, and Rep. Lyle Larson, R-Dist. 122, joined forces issuing a letter Wednesday requesting the removal of toll roads from the Highway 281 expansion project.

Campbell and Larson addressed the letter to County Comissioner Kevin Wolff and the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The pair cited billions of new transportation dollars made available as a result of the recent Texas Legislative session.

"With the potential to add (hundreds of millions of dollars) to improve San Antonio area roads and the surrounding counties, we remain committed to seeing U.S. 281 expanded from Loop 1604 to the county line without tolls," they wrote in the letter.

An $825 million funding plan -- known colloquially as the "825 plan" -- will expand Highway 281 and Interstate 10. The current plan involves a tolled model for accessibility.
