Man accused of beating dog with shovel, rake

Manuel Pacheco, 28, allegedly upset about destroyed property

SAN ANTONIO – A 28-year-old suspect identified as Manuel Pacheco has admitted to abusing a dog by beating it with a shovel and other items because he was upset that the animal was destroying property, according to an arrest affidavit.

Pacheco was arrested Thursday on a charge of cruelty to non-livestock stemming from an investigation that began in mid-June.

The affidavit stated that a witness contacted Animal Care Services on June 19, saying that Pacheco had been abusing the dog named "Zeus" for several months.

Investigators said the witness also later supplied them with video, showing the suspect in the act of beating the animal.

The affidavit stated that Pacheco also was seen punching and kicking the rottweiller.

During their investigation, ACS workers questioned Pacheco and said he admitted that he knowingly abused the dog.

The affidavit stated that he told them he did it because Zeus had been destroying items in the backyard of his home.
