Elderly man injured as fire rips through SW Side home

Fire reported at home on W. Winnipeg Avenue southwest of downtown

SAN ANTONIO – An elderly man was hospitalized after a fire ripped through his Southwest Side home early Monday morning, San Antonio Fire Department officials said.

The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of West Winnipeg Avenue.

San Antonio fire officials said the victim's son woke up and noticed smoke in the home.

He woke up his father and called 911 before getting his father out of the home, fire officials said.

When he returned for his father, the fire had quickly spread throughout the home.

Firefighters responded and the victim was pulled out of the home and put him into an ambulance.

The man suffered smoke inhalation and had no pulse when he was removed from the home, according to Christian Bove of the San Antonio Fire Department.

Paramedics managed to restart the man's heart by the time he reached the hospital, Bove said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage estimates have not been released.
