Police make major drug bust after pulling over driver using cellphone

SAPD: Drugs en route from Mexico

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police arrested a man in his 50s Monday after finding more than 14 kilos of methamphetamine hidden in his truck.

Police said the discovery was made when officers pulled the man over after spotting him using his cellphone while driving in violation of the city's hands-free ordinance.

The traffic stop was made on Interstate 35 at Cassin Road.

Officers said the man's story didn't make sense, and an officer noticed something strange about the vehicle's spare tire.

A K-9 unit responded to the scene and alerted police to the hidden drugs.

"In its present state, as you see, the price could be anywhere from $250,000 to $300,000. However, once they take it out, reconstitute it and then repackage it for retail sale, that value could go easily into the millions," San Antonio Police Department Sgt. Javier Salazar said.

Police said the drugs were en route from Mexico when they were intercepted Monday.
