Homes in North Side flood zone demolished
Area near Olmos Basin hit hard by Memorial Day 2013 flood
SAN ANTONIO – Several homes in a North Side neighborhood located in a flood zone were demolished Friday.
The homes were on Barbara and Shannon Lee streets, west of McCullough Avenue near Oblate Drive, and sat upstream from the Olmos Basin.
The area was hit hard by the Memorial Day flood of 2013 and dozens of homes have been in disrepair ever since.
Most of the houses were bought out by the city and are being removed to make room for new flood control improvements.
"We still have one (homeowner) holding out. I'm not sure if they're going to buy that one house over here. But for the most part, I'm happy to see progress because it's been like a little, almost like a ghost town type feeling over here on this side of the street," resident Adam Alcoses said.
The people who lived in the homes began moving out in the spring. The city is working to demolish 35 houses for the project, which started last September.
