SAPD: Man went on rampage, held woman against will in apartment

Atilla Charles facing charges in 2010 incident

SAN ANTONIO – A suspect identified as Atilla Charles, 34, is accused of going on an angry rampage and holding a 38-year-old woman against her will inside a Northeast Side apartment.

Charges were filed against Charles on Wednesday in connection with the incident which happened in November 2010, according to an arrest affidavit.

The affidavit stated that the woman told police she arrived at her friend's apartment in the 200 block of Rainbow Drive and was waiting for her friend to come home when Charles showed up.

She said she allowed him to wait inside the home with her. Soon after, another woman, described in the affidavit as Charles' wife, also arrived at the apartment.

The affidavit stated that the victim told police at some point after that Charles went on a rampage and began smashing things inside the apartment.

She said he was upset because someone had taken his car and failed to return it.

She said when she attempted to leave the home due to fear, Charles would not let her go.

The woman said he and his wife then held her there for about three hours until her friend came home, the affidavit stated.

She said during that time, Charles ordered his wife to check her, and the wife conducted an invasive search of her body, the affidavit stated.

The woman told police that when her friend returned home, Charles began yelling at the friend and took her cellphone when she tried to call police.

The friend was able to get away and call 911, giving police the names of Charles and his wife, the affidavit stated.

Detectives interviewed Charles' wife on Aug. 29 about the four and a half year old incident and they said she told them she helped Charles because she was afraid of him, the affidavit stated.

It's unclear what prompted them to talk to her now about the 2010 case.

Charles is described as being 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighing more than 300 pounds.

An online search shows a man —- also named Atilla Charles from Texas -- with the same name, physical description and date of birth represented the United States in the 2013 World Games as a sumo wrestler.
