NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – Several picnickers were hurt when a large tree branch fell on them at Hinman Island, New Braunfels police said.

Police and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived at 7:20 p.m. Saturday to Hinman Island after a large tree branch snapped and fell on picnickers gathered below.

Emergency crews arrived and found eight people with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Of those injured, four people were taken to local hospitals as a precautionary measure.

Police said the large tree limb, which was hanging 20 feet above the ground, apparently snapped with no warning and was not caused by anyone climbing or swinging from the branch.

City crews went to work removing the limb and a small section of Hinman Island was cordoned off for that process, police said.

No portion of the Comal River was affected by the incident.
