Richard Cantu Vasquez sentenced to 45 years for shooting

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – The New Braunfels Police Department on Wednesday released dashcam video of a 2014 officer-involved shooting.

The shooting happened Oct. 20, 2014, as officers responded to a report of a disturbance with a possible weapon in the 1800 block of Stonewall. Police said Richard Cantu Vasquez was standing outside a home when the officers drove up.

Vasquez started to run and fired three shots with a handgun in the direction of an officer. The dashcam footage released Wednesday shows the shots as Vasquez fled.

No one was hit by the shots and Vasquez was later arrested, indicted and convicted by a Comal County jury. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison for attempted capital murder of a police officer and 15 years for aggravated assault against a public servant. Vasquez was 17 at the time of the shooting.

The Police Department said it released the footage now that the case has been fully adjudicated.
