Convicted cop killer undergoes psychiatric evaluation

SAN ANTONIO – The sentencing phase for convicted killer Mark Anthony Gonzalez was put on hold Tuesday while he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation.

Gonzalez’s attorneys said he suffered a concussion before the shooting which contributed to his actions and made him unfit for the punishment phase of the trial.

A jury convicted Gonzalez on Monday of capital murder in the death of Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Kenneth Vann four years ago.

Vann was stopped at a traffic light on the city’s East Side in 2011, when Gonzalez pulled up beside him and opened fire.

Sentencing may resume later this week. Prosecutors said they are seeking the death penalty.
