Family seeks justice for loved one killed in February

Steven Cerna found dead in ditch on West Side

SAN ANTONIO – The family members of Steven Cerna, 21, are celebrating their first holiday season without him this year after he was killed in February.

Cerna's body was found Feb. 20 in a ditch in the 1100 block of Shadwell Drive. He had been shot to death.

His family members remember the morning like it was yesterday.

"Somebody knocked on the door and told him, 'Let's go somewhere.' He ended up going with them thinking they were his friends and then he never came back home," said Stephanie Cerna, Steven Cerna's sister.

The ditch where his body was found, known to locals as "hell's gate," has been closed since his death.

"I have so many memories of him, but they're all kind of taken by this ditch," Stephanie Cerna said.

She said what's most frustrating is ending the year without closure.

"We know who he left with. We know what car it was, but nobody has been caught. Nobody has been charged for his murder," Stephanie Cerna said.

Police identified a person of interest in the case earlier this year, but no charges were filed.

Anyone with information on Steven Cerna's death is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP.
