Judson ISD board again approves naming school after Mackey

4-3 vote comes after hours of debate

SAN ANTONIO – The Judson Independent School District Board of Trustees voted on Wednesday night to name the district's new high school after former superintendent Willis Mackey.

The 4-3 vote came after hours of debate in a specially-called meeting and is the second time the board voted on the name.

The board first approved the name for the district's new school currently under construction on Evans Road in September. But some members in the community voiced opposition to the name and hence another vote was taken.

"I didn't understand the level of this harmony that issue would cause," board member Jose Macias said. "When I learned the issue itself is contentious, the responsible thing is to alleviate that divisiveness within the community."

Wanda Bibles, who is Mackey's sister, said the board made the right decision.

"We voted on it back in September, and I think the honorable thing to do is stick to the decision we made then," Bibles said.

The board also voted 4-3 to keep officer positions as currently assigned.
