They said the officer was bitten on his arm, leg and face when he tried to help the 39-year-old man, who was being mauled by a pack of dogs.

Someone had called 911 just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday after hearing a person yelling in the area of Burton Avenue and Cantrell Drive, police said. The officer was answering that call when he saw the man behind attacked.

Police said the officer pulled out his gun and fired at the dogs when they turned on him. He killed three of them.

It was not clear right away who owns the dogs.
