Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio clashed sharply over both national security and immigration during the debate and front-runner Donald Trump stood firmly behind his provocative call for banning Muslims from entering the United States.

Presidential candidate Jeb Bush said rival Donald Trump is a "chaos candidate" and would be "a chaos president."

The prime-time debate was the first for Republicans since the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino.

The candidates on the main stage were Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, businesswoman Carly Fiorina, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, neurosurgeon Ben Carson, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, and current leader Donald Trump.
