Police have 'persons of interest' in shooting that killed San Marcos college student

Hundreds attended a vigil at UNT for Sara Mutschlechner Saturday night

SAN ANTONIO – The Denton police said they have persons of interest less than two days after a University of North Texas student was gunned down.

Hundreds attended a vigil at UNT for Sara Mutschlechner Saturday night.

Mutschlechner, 20, was killed early New Year’s Day while acting as the designated driver for her friends.

Police believe passengers in her car exchanged words with people in a nearby SUV carrying five or six men.

Someone in the SUV directed gunfire toward her car. Mutschlechner was struck, and her car crashed into a utility pole.

Two of the men believed to have been in the car with the shooter had attended the same party as Mutschlechner and her friends, according to police.

As the investigation progesses, police are running into students who are remaining tight-lipped, for fear of getting in trouble for underage drinking.
