Arson investigating vacant apartment fire on South Side

Cause of fire not known; damage estimated at $5,000

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio fire officials are investigating how a vacant apartment building on the South Side caught fire early Monday morning.

The fire was reported just after 5 a.m. in the 1500 block of W. Gerald near Vickers Avenue and W. Southcross Boulevard.

Investigators said a neighbor called the fire department after smelling smoke. They said the fire was in a vacant detached building that had been converted into an apartment. At present no one one lives in the building and it has no working utilities. 

The owner of the building told KSAT 12 he keeps a close watch on the apartment and said it did not appear that anyone had been getting inside.

The cause of the fire is not known. Arson is presently investigating.

The damage is estimated to be roughly $5,000.
