Suspect in 2014 killing of elderly SA woman still unknown

Ruth Bateman Clay, 90, found dead in east side home

SAN ANTONIO – A little more than two years have passed since Ruth Bateman Clay was found dead inside her east side home. Police have still not been able to identify her killer.

Clay, 90, was shot in the neck -- possibly by a stray bullet that came from outside her home through her bedroom wall.

Police believe she was killed on Dec. 23, 2013. Clay had been dropped off at her home in the 300 block of Como after she attended a Christmas party. That night, police have said, they responded to a call of shots fired in the area.

Clay's friends checked on her Dec. 25 and again on Dec. 28, but were not able to reach her. On Jan. 3, 2014, police were called to Clay's home. They found her dead on the floor of her bedroom.

"The detectives believe that the shot may have come from a nearby business. If anyone who may have been around that evening heard something, saw someone shooting a gun, playing with a gun, we need to know that information," said Chief William McManus in Oct. 2014.

Police have asked anyone who might remember hearing the shot or who may have seen someone shooting a gun, possibly from the 400 block of Spriggsdale, to call Crime Stoppers at 210-224-STOP.
