Police said they observed Pedro Mesa, 35, will bloodstains on him and immediately took him into custody.

The victim, Mesa's mother, was found lying in the front of the home with what appeared to be a puncture wound to the chest.

The woman was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Kendall Regional Medical Center, but she died en route to the hospital.

According to the report, medical staff at the hospital found a "foreign metal object, possibly consistent with a knife blade, within the victim's puncture wound."

Detectives said they also found the handle of what appeared to belong to a kitchen knife or utensil in the front yard of the home.

Mesa, who was wearing a spit mask in his arrest photo, was questioned by detectives at the Miami-Dade Police Department headquarters in Doral.

Police said Mesa confessed to the incident, saying he "beat the living (expletive) out of her" and that he "stabbed her in the heart."

A witness who called 911 told police that she saw Mesa punch and kick his mother repeatedly.

Investigators said Mesa's right hand appeared to be swollen and had a possible laceration.

It's unclear why he was wearing a spit mask, but a police representative told Local 10 News that it may have just been as a precaution.

A motive for the killing was not immediately known.
