State Sen. Uresti holds off challenger Helen Madla

Uresti to face GOP challenge in November election for District 19

SAN ANTONIO – It was a night in which the results were never in doubt as State Sen. Carlos Uresti easily defeated challenger Helen Madla in the Democratic Primary race for Texas Senate District 19.

Though the numbers continued to grow all evening, Uresti said he did not take the challenge lightly. He said now is the time to look ahead to the next legislative session.

In order to get there, he must defeat Republican candidate Peter Flores, a retired game warden from Pleasanton, in the November general election.

Though she was a novice with limited resources and experience, Madla remained upbeat during the vote count Tuesday night.

Madla’s late husband, Frank, was defeated by Uresti in a bitter battle for the same seat in 2006. But she said that was not why she chose to challenge Uresti.

“He better step up to the challenge,” Madla said. “Because he has been and District 19 deserves a lot more. Like I said, win or lose, I won already.”
