SAN ANTONIO – A faulty sprinkler system set off fire alarms and displaced students at a local high school in the Northside Independent School District early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred before 9 a.m. at Stevens High School, located in the 600 block of North Ellison Drive, near Potranco Road and Highway 151.

A NISD spokesperson said a malfunctioning sprinkler head on the second floor outside the cafeteria flooded the area as water rushed to the first floor hallway near the main entrance.

Students were evacuated from the flooded building and moved to the gym and the auditorium as firefighters worked at the scene.

Witnesses at the school said at one point students could be seen standing outside in the rain. Many students have left campus either on their own, or with their parents.

The district said no fire was involved and that they are looking into what set off the sprinkler system.

There is no word yet on when the building will be dry.
