Man accused of using children to hide stolen items

Christopher Vera, 34, charged with theft

SAN ANTONIO – Christopher Vera, 34, is accused of using his children as camouflage by hiding shoplifted items beneath them.

Vera was arrested Wednesday on a charge of theft in connection with the October incident.

An arrest affidavit said Vera went into a Southwest Side Home Depot store and began placing tools and other items into a storage container which he was pushing around on a flatbed cart.

Police said Vera then placed his children on top of the pile and headed toward an exit.

The affidavit said Vera stopped at the door and chatted briefly with an employee. When the worker walked toward her cash register, Vera walked out of the business without paying for any of the merchandise, the affidavit said.

Records show that Vera is a registered sex offender who was convicted of a sexual offense in 2001 involving a 4-year-old girl.
