Ex-TCU QB Trevone Boykin makes court appearance

Boykin faces assault charges in River Walk bar brawl

SAN ANTONIO – Former Texas Christian University star quarterback Trevone Boykin, 22, made a court appearance Wednesday morning in San Antonio for a pre-indictment appearance.

Boykin was charged in December with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication in connection with a barroom brawl at a River Walk nightclub on the eve of the 2015 Alamobowl.

Boykin was slated to start as quarterback for TCU, but was suspended following his arrest.

Wednesday's pre-indictment court appearance before 187th District Court Judge Steve Hilbig was an opportunity for Boykin's attorney to review his case with prosecutors and possibly discuss a plea bargain.

Boykin and his attorney left the courtroom apparently opting instead to have his case presented to a grand jury.

"I don't care if it's high profile or not. Our job is to be consistent in the system so we're going to treat this case like any other case," Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood said. "It just happens to get more attention than others."

A grand jury will have the option of returning what is called a "no bill," or dismissal, or return an indictment.

LaHood said if the panel returns an indictment, "Your trial clock starts and you will be on track to either work out the deal or end up in front of a jury."

A date for the case to be presented to a grand jury has not been set.
