Man accused of starting fire at NW Side hotel arrested

Roland Tovar, 29, charged with arson

SAN ANTONIO – Roland Tovar, 29, has been arrested in connection with a fire at a Northwest side hotel about two weeks ago.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, arson investigators with the San Antonio Fire Department identified Tovar through surveillance video from the hotel.

The affidavit stated that he was supposed to be delivering pizza flyers at the Comfort Inn and Suites near Interstate 10 and Vance Jackson March 24.

Investigators said they obtained video from the hotel and saw Tovar go into a storage room three different times. The affidavit stated that smoke is seen pouring out of the that room soon after Tovar left it for the last time.

The affidavit stated that investigators believe Tovar set fire to a maid's cart inside that room.  The fire sent smoke into the hallway of the third floor, causing guests to evacuate their rooms, investigators said.

The affidavit stated that Tovar told arson investigators he started the fire because he was angry with his boss about money issues.

Tovar was booked into jail Wednesday on a charge of arson.
