SAPD: Driver tries to run down officer

Man leads police on chase on city's far West Side

SAN ANTONIO – Police are searching for a driver they said tried to run down an officers before he led them on a chase, officials said Thursday.

The incident began around 1:30 a.m. at the Hilton San Antonio Hill Country Hotel & Spa parking lot in the 9800 block of Westover Hills Boulevard, where police were told a drunk man was causing a disturbance.

The front desk told KSAT 12 News that the pretended to be a guest at the hotel bar, where he was talking to ladies and harassing the bartender.

The man asked for a room, and at one point hotel officials asked him to leave and escorted him outside.

When police arrived, they saw the man inside a pickup truck. Officers said when they approached the vehicle, the man put the truck in gear, backed up and jumped the curb to go around one of the three police cruisers.

An officer told dispatch the man tried to run one of them down.

The man drove away at an unusually slow speed, according to police. The man led police down a Highway 151 access road and then west on FM 471 before turning into a mobile home park four miles away.

Police said they followed the man with no lights or sirens in hopes he would stop on his own. Instead, led them straight to a dead end street, where he rammed a polic cruiser and drove through a yard and a fence.

Cindy Tallard's bedroom is right next to the truck's path. Tallard said she's glad no one was hurt.

"I mean I'm glad it was at 2 o'clock at night because there's a soccer field over there, people play over there and stuff," Tallard said. "Pretty serious."

Officers at the scene said they lost the man when he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away on foot. A police helicopter and the K-9 unit assisted in the search.
