Woman testifies against fiance in murder trial

Clarence Wright accused in drug-related killing of Jeremiah Gomez

SAN ANTONIO – A woman who said she was Clarence Wright’s fiancee testified Thursday that she accompanied him to the home of Jeremiah Gomez, a man from whom they’d purchased drugs in the past, on the night of Oct. 19, 2013, when Gomez was shot to death.

Amy Garcia, 27, said that Wright knocked on the door to Gomez's apartment and the men exchanged words “for about 30 seconds.”

“There was a scuffle and he brought out his gun,” she testified, referring to Wright, who is on trial for murder in Gomez's killing.

“Who is he? Who are you referring to?” asked prosecutor Kim Gonzalez.

“Clarence,” Garcia replied. “I heard a shot and I saw 'D' fall to the ground.”

She said that she knew Gomez only as “D.”

Garcia said that Wright fired several more shots into the apartment before they fled on foot.

Not long after, the pair were captured hiding in the backyard of a friend’s nearby home.

Both Garcia and Wright were charged with murder.

As part of a deal with prosecutors, Garcia later pleaded guilty to lesser charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and agreed to testify against Wright.

If he is found guilty, Wright will face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Testimony is expected to continue on Friday in Judge Jefferson Moore’s 186th District Court.
