Man facing life sentence in child sex case

Sanchez' children, mother plead for probation

SAN ANTONIO – Closing arguments and jury deliberations are set for Tuesday in Judge Ron Rangel’s 379th District Court in the punishment phase of the trial of Ivan Sanchez.

Sanchez, 42, was convicted on Friday of continuous sexual assault of a child and indecency with a child by contact. The victim was a 6-year-old girl.

During the punishment phase of his trial on Monday several of Sanchez’ adult children and his mother asked the jury to sentence him to probation.

His daughter Bethany Sanchez vowed to support her father if he was placed on probation.

“I’ve always been there for my dad, I always support my dad, “she testified.

His mother testified that Sanchez is a good grandfather.

“He’s a loving grandfather and very giving,” said Gina Cologne. “He’s the light of their eyes and they are his light.”

In 2006 Sanchez was convicted in another court on 17 counts of continuous sexual assault of a child an indecency with a child by contact. That conviction was later overturned and Sanchez was granted a new trial on 4 counts.

On Monday prosecutors introduced Sanchez’ record that included a conviction on drug charges and an assault family violence case.

He is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison.
