SAISD bus driver terminated after student jumping incident

Special needs student, 9, removed his seat restraint and jumped last Wednesday

SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio Independent School District bus driver is no longer with the district following an incident where a special needs student jumped from a moving bus.

SAISD officials said Monday that the driver was terminated on Friday, one day after the bus monitor resigned.

Last Wednesday the 9-year-old special needs student removed his seat restraint and jumped from the rear emergency exit as the bus traveled down the 4500 block East Houston Street.

At the time the bus was not going too fast when the boy jumped but the child landed on his head and suffered minor injuries.

Last week the district said the driver and the monitor failed to follow safety procedures and protocols that were put in place after the same student had previously jumped from the bus and removed his restraints.

The district said it is trying to learn from the mistakes and make sure the incident is not repeated.
