Fort Sam Houston Cemetery main entrances to close for project

Entrances off Harry Wurzbach shut down for four months

SAN ANTONIO – The main and service entrances to the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery off Harry Wurzbach will be closed for four months, beginning Monday, for a major renovation project.

The only entrance to the cemetery will be from Winans Road to Nursery Road and then into the cemetery through San Antonio Boulevard.

Officials said during construction, Shelter No. 1 will be closed.

The gravesite locator kiosk will be down. Visitors can call 210-820-3891 to find out the location of their loved one's gravesite.  Those with computer access can click here or download a mobile app (select Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery).

Public restrooms will be located in the small mobile building next to the warehouse behind the old adminstration building toward Shelter No. 5.

The facility is open for visitation from dawn to dusk and the cemetery will still be holding committal services while under construction.

The renovation project includes relocating a historical building to be preserved at another location within the cemetery ground, retrofitting the old administrative building for a new public information center and public restrooms and resurfacing San Antonio Boulevard.
