West Virginia man died in crash in North Carolina

KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. – A West Virginia man who was reportedly traveling to San Antonio for an artificial lung transplant has died in a crash in North Carolina.

Media outlets reported John Michael Newman, 56, of Beckley, West Virginia, died Wednesday in the two-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 74 near Kings Mountain.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper L.T. Randall said Newman was a passenger in the SUV driven by his relative when it was rear-ended by a pickup truck while trying to merge onto Interstate 85.

Randall said several others were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries. Charges are pending.

The Gaston Gazette reported Newman and three others were traveling to a motel in Shelby, where they planned to meet Newman's girlfriend, who was going to drive him to San Antonio for the transplant.
