Border Patrol seizes marijuana; customs officers confiscate cocaine

SAN ANTONIO – Border Patrol agents on Tuesday seized more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana in the Rio Grande Valley.

Officials said agents near La Rosita spotted 22 smugglers crossing several rafts full of marijuana across the Rio Grande River and loading the pot into a vehicle.

Agents stopped the vehicle, which contained 267 bundles of marijuana, officials said. The estimated street value of the seizure was more than $2.4 million.

The driver and passenger swam back to Mexico, officials said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Laredo seized 34 pounds of cocaine Sunday at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge.

A K-9 alerted officers to the odor of narcotics from a 2008 Volkswagen Passat. An inspection of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of the cocaine, which has a street value of $267,580, officials said.

A 20-year-old man from San Antonio was arrested.
