Family of slain 5-year-old girl holds vigil

Ana Garza was shot, killed while sleeping

SAN ANTONIO – Maximilliana Aguilar said her daughter, Ana Nevah Garza, despite being only 5 years old, was a doting big sister.

"My baby, my oldest of three. She took very good care of her sisters she loved them so much," Aguilar said.

Aguilar said her daughter, who loved animals, had already planned on becoming a veterinarian.

"She would always run through the house trying to take of her little animals. Very caring, very loving, little girl," Aguilar said.

Family and friends on Sunday night held a vigil for Ana in a park at St. Stephens Baptist Church. The same park Ana's mother played in while growing up.

"She loved it. Playing basketball or going on the swings. It was just her favorite place to be," Aguilar said.

Ana was shot in the head June 1 while some men were attempting to rob her stepfather, Carlos Aguilar, in front of the family's home in the 800 block of Pecan Valley Drive, police said. Gunfire erupted, striking the little girl as she slept in a room in the front of the house. She was taken off life support and died June 8. Carlos Aguilar remains on life support.

Police have charged Murjan Issack Abdi, 19, and Abdi Abdi, 18, with capital murder.

"She was just so beautiful, so active," Aguilar said. "I just miss wanting to see her run to me again. I never get to see that again. It hurts me so much."
